Selvi *, an 18 year old Indian girl, born in Ouppalam to a very humble family, has been sponsored by the Volontariat since her childhood.
Besides her school activities, Selvi took lessons in Bharata Natyam, the traditional south Indian dance offered among the extra-curricular activities of the Volontariat. She was diligent and enthusiastic and applied herself to the complex skills of the dance style.
Along the years, it became clear that Selvi had a natural talent for dance and her ability would allow her to pursue the art at a higher level. The prestigious Kalakshetra, an institution of national importance located in Chennai, seemed to be the perfect place.
Nevertheless, Selvi’s admission to this famous institution and her integration into the activities has not been easy. The girl’s disadvantaged origin, it was feared, would be a factor against her acceptance in the school. But this was without taking into account the determination and emotional support of the Volontariat and the kindness and inclusiveness of the Director of the school.
Now, Selvi has spent one year in Kalakshetra with good results, except in English, in which she still has to catch up. During the summer holiday, she has joined the organization team of the children’s camp at Tuttipakkam and will teach the first steps of Bharata Natyam to the children.
It is with great pleasure that the Volontariat sees one of its sponsored children, not only enjoying a high level of education in one of India’s best schools, but also sharing her skills with the younger girls.
